This Week’s Scenario

It’s lunchtime. You’ve been at it since morning. Don’t touch that. Come here. Stop. We don’t do that. You’ve said all of it, calmly at first, then more firmly, then with an edge in your voice you didn’t intend. Your toddler has melted down several times already today, and the plate of food you just made is on the floor. You’re standing in your kitchen, lunch ruined, completely defeated, thinking: I don’t know what I’m doing wrong. I try everything and nothing works. And tomorrow I have to get up and do all of this again.

This is the reality of parenting a toddler. The exhaustion isn’t a sign that you’re failing. It’s a sign that you’re doing one of the hardest jobs there is, and doing it without anyone telling you the one thing that would actually help: your toddler isn’t ignoring you. They genuinely can’t do what you’re asking, not yet, and not consistently. Their brain is still building the wiring it needs for impulse control, emotional regulation, and transition. That wiring won’t be complete for years. For a brief explanation of why this is, and what it means for how you respond, listen to this week’s companion podcast episode.

What you can do right now is work with where their brain actually is, rather than where you need it to be. That’s what these scripts are for.
