The Repair: When Your Child Stops Telling You The Truth

Punishment won't fix it - Here's what actually works to rebuild honesty in kids aged 5-9

Your school age child is not a liar.

I want to say that clearly before we go any further because I think it’s the most important thing a parent can understand about dishonesty at this age. When a 5 to 9 year old isn’t telling you the truth, they are not a dishonest person by nature. They’re a small person who did something they’re scared of, and the fear of what happens next is bigger right now than their ability to be honest about what happened.

That isn’t a character flaw. That’s a developmental reality. And the way you respond to it will either grow their courage to be honest with you or confirm their fear that honesty is not safe.

At this age dishonesty has a very specific texture. You will see it in their body before you hear it in their words. Th

ey get nervous and guarded when certain topics come up. Their answers get shorter and more evasive. They fidget, avoid eye contact, look anywhere but at your face. If you ask them to tell you what happened again, the details shift and change. And if you press, they may suddenly become disproportionately angry or tearful, not because the question was hard but because the pressure of holding the secret is suddenly too much.

What you are watching is not defiance. It’s fear wearing the costume of defiance.

And the most important thing you can do in that moment is not be fooled by the costume.
