This Week’s Scenario
Your toddler hits a sibling, or hits you, and you sit with them for a brief calm-down moment, staying close, helping them settle before you talk it through. A minute later, once you’ve stepped out of the room, your spouse scoops them up, hugs them, and says, “It’s okay, you can go play now.” The moment never actually finished. Your toddler never got to the calm, and your toddler, who doesn’t have the words for any of this yet, just learned something anyway.
